The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) recently honored 4 outstanding Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) for 2009.

Leading the list is half-paralyzed Eliza Bataanon who first went abroad on February 26, 1986 to work as a domestic helper in London. After nine months in London, her husband died and their house in Pandacan, Manila that she had just renovated burned down, forcing her to return to the Philippines.

She then sought employment in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia afterwards but later went back home to Philippines when she could not bear with the workload and hard life anymore.

She was half-paralyzed in 2006 after suffering from a stroke and had to rely on his second son, who is working as a pedicab driver, for her medications and education of her youngest son.

OWWA hailed her as the outstanding financially and physically challenged OFW during the celebration of the 14th Migrant Worker’s Day last June 7.

—–

Ricardo Amador traveled all over the world during his 36 years as a migrant worker and he was cited as the longest serving OFW at 59 years old.

He has worked in Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India, Saudi Arabia, and Oman as a welder, a supervisor, and filing clerk, among others.

He retired in 1998 and went back to Valenzuela City.

—–

Lolito Lascuña who has been away from his loved ones for 25 years was hailed as the outstanding sea-based OFW. His earnings abroad enabled him to put up a showroom, several apartments, and an air-conditioning business in Marikina.

He was recently promoted as a chief engineer and has no plans of retiring yet.

—–

49-year-old Francisco Aguilar Jr. who has been in Riyadh for 13 years in engineering works was cited as the outstanding land-based OFW. He spent half his life in Saudi Arabia working at the King Abdul Aziz Military Academy and the other half at the National Industrialization Company.

—–

Each honoree were awarded with a plaque and P10,000 worth of G-cash, a card-less method of money transfer with just a text message offered by Globe Telecommunications.
