Construction Jobs in Guam – Filipinos May Not Be Prioritized
Although Filipinos are preferred in Guam, construction workers in the US may compete with Filipinos seeking overseas employment and may get in the way of getting Filipinos hired for construction jobs.
And because of the poor economic condition and unemployment situation in the US, these workers in the US may be prioritized.
Construction jobs will be opened to everyone since new barracks, dependents’ housing, new roads and other infrastructures and buildings will be constructed to accommodate the transfer and relocation.
Although there are still no job orders approved by POEA and the employment contract is still being finalized, the POEA and Guam Labor officials have already agreed on the hourly wages which will start at $12.
The demand for construction workers will start by the first quarter of 2010 and actual construction will start in July 2010. The 18-month project is expected to be completed by 2012.
Nevertheless, those interested for construction jobs in Guam should be prepared since the application process will start in a few months from now. With the immense skills and knowledge Filipinos have, there is no doubt we can be as competitive as ever – prioritized or not.
