The Bahrain government has taken a step forward with regards to respecting and supporting then rights of expatriates which includes OFWs. With the eased sponsorship rule, foreign workers can change jobs with no-objection certificates from their employers.
Although this new rule will not completely abolish the sponsorship, expatriate workers will now have the right to change employers without much ado because this “part of the clause in Labor Market Regulatory Law” according to Bahrain Labor Undersecretary Jameel Humadan.
Humadan further said that the implementation of this clause will improve Bahrain’s image in the international community.
Just like other embassies in Bahrain, the Philippine embassy is currently preparing an awareness campaign so that all OFWs will be aware of the changes in Bahrain’s labor market situations particularly now that they have the privilege to shift jobs without the permission of sponsors.
This new labor rule was implemented last August 1 even with the objections from the business community in Bahrain. I greatly appreciate this policy and I do hope that other countries in the Arabian Peninsula will do the same in the near future.
